Shipwrecks in River and Ocean

The treacherous east coast of South Africa and the Kowie River have played havoc with a great number of ships and the Museum has many photographs of ships and shipwrecks.

See the pottery, the shrapnel canon, the ship’s figurehead and other relics which have washed ashore or been salvaged from different wrecks.

Read about the Briseis which went aground in 1859 off Fountain Rocks near the Kowie River mouth and was salvaged in the 1980s by a past inhabitant of Port Alfred, Dennis Croukamp, who discovered the wreck.

Learn about the Volo, the Finland, the Umvolosi, the Samuel Cawood, the Cape St Blaise and many others which came to grief on our coastline.

Follow the history of shipping from sail to steam and learn about the development of the harbour and shipping trade in Port Alfred.
